August 6, 2018 Newsletter/Meeting Minutes

 

The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Association will be September 10th, 7:00 P.M. at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Mass.

 

Called to Order; The meeting was Called to Order by President-Bob Silvia at 7: 04 PM.

 

Pledge of Allegiance; President-Bob Silvia, led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

 

Opening Prayer; Chaplain, Armand L’Heureux, read the Opening Prayer.

 

Roll Call of Officers; President-Bob Silvia, Vice President-Dennis Proulx, Treasurer-Dave Levesque, Chaplain- Armand L’Heureux and Secretary-Hank Mello were all present.

 

President-Bob Silvia moved to change the order of business in order to present Mr. and Mrs. Mike Phillips with a certificate of appreciation for their generous donation of $1,000.00. It was signed by all the officers.

 

The meeting was returned to the regular order of business.

 

Treasurer’s Report; Treasurer-Dave Levesque, read the Treasurer's Report for the month of June/July.

 

Reading of the Previous Meeting; Vice President-Dennis Proulx, read the minutes for the month of June.

 

Reading of Correspondence; None

 

Application for Membership; 2 new members were approved but their applications were not at the meeting.

 

Committee Reports

 

 2018 Fiftieth Year Anniversary of the Vietnam Fountain; Vice President, Dennis Proulx informed the group on the progress of the committee on the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam Fountain. The committee is getting pictures of the 13 names on the wall next to the fountain. A large picture of Vietnam was created. The location of the 13 names on our wall will show the location where they were Killed in Action.

·        The committee has been in contact with the Old Colony Historical Museum about the use of their hall in case of bad weather. But it may be difficult for them to accommodate, so a plan B is needed.

·        Coffee and donuts will be paid for and arranged with Ed Correia and Colonial Donuts.

·        We are selling coins and t-shirts that commemorate the 50 Anniversary of the Taunton Vietnam Fountain.

·        Ann Marie Matulis is taping the meeting to be used as a program she is producing for us for the 50th Anniversary.

·        The committee was meeting with Dr. William Hanna to discuss what will be in his speech. We do not want to duplicate what he will be saying. 

·        Dennis Proulx and Hank have been on the local radio station discussing the plans for the 50th Anniversary.

·        Dennis thanked the committee for their outstanding work!

 

Unfinished Business

 

·         Cruise Nights; Tony Rosario reported that the July 28 th Cruise Night was very successful. The next Cruise Night is August 25 th from 3:30 to 7:30 PM behind the Dighton Town Hall. The membership was reminded that help will be needed.

·         Flag Day: A number of members attended the Elks Flag Day.     

  • Funeral for fellow Vietnam Veteran, Robert Cushman who passed away October 4, 2017; Chaplain- Armand L’Heureux and Secretary-Hank Mello attended the ceremony. 


New Business

  • Purple Heart: Members were asked to attend the Purple Heat ceremony in Raynham.

·         Lifetime Membership: A proposal was made to have the membership dues changed to $100 for members 65 or older. For younger than 65, pay $100 and the member is paid for the next 10 years. After a debate, the membership voted to the leave membership dues as is.

  • Donation; The membership voted to send a check for $75.00 to the First Alliance Church in the memory of the late TAVVA member Williams E. Rivers.

 

  • Good of the Association; Mary Standish described a trip she took to Spain and France in memory of Tom Ryan and Michael O’Connell who were killed in WW2. The American Legion Post in Middleboro is named after Michael O’Connell. She brought soil from the post to place on his grave and soil from his grave to place at the post.

 

Salute the Flag; President-Bob Silvia, led the membership in a salute to the flag.

 

Moment of Silent Hope; Chaplain, Armand L’Heureux, led the membership in a moment of silent Hope.

 

The membership was reminded that the next meeting will be September 10th. There is no meeting scheduled for the month of July.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 PM.

March 5, 2018 Newsletter/Meeting Minutes

The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Association will be April 2, 7:00 P.M. at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Mass.

Called to Order; The meeting was Called to Order by Vice President-Dennis Proulx at 7:02 PM.

Pledge of Allegiance; Vice President-Dennis Proulx, led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Opening Prayer; Chaplain, Armand L’Heureux, read the Opening Prayer.

Roll Call of Officers; Vice President-Dennis Proulx, Treasurer-Dave Levesque, Chaplain- Armand L’Heureux were present. President-Bob Silvia, was out sick and Secretary-Hank Mello was on vacation.

Treasurer’s Report; Treasurer-Dave Levesque, read the Treasurer's Report for the month of January.

Reading of the Previous Meeting; Vice President-Dennis Proulx, read the minutes for the month of February.

Reading of CorrespondenceVice President, President- Dennis Proulx, read a letter from member Bill Oldfield along with check for $100. $10 dues and $90 donation. Bill says he is spending all his time in a wheelchair and in a hospital bed. Otherwise he says he is feeling good!

Louie Demers passed around a letter from New Jersey Vietnam Veterans showing how they handle their Scholarship.

Application for Membership; None

Vice President-Dennis Proulx told the membership that he was changing the order of business in order to have Rep. Shaunna O’Connell talk about the Flags of Valor. She asked the membership if the Kiwanis Club could sell flags at the 50 Anniversary of the Fountain. A motion was made and accepted to allow this as long as it was away from the ceremony.

  • 2018 Fiftieth Year Anniversary of the Vietnam Fountain; Vice President-Dennis Proulx explained that a new designed coin will be available the first week in April. Bob Silvia made contact with Lt Murphy’s sister Pat. Dennis and Bob visited Lt Murphy memorial tribute at Stonehill College. Bob, Dennis, Armand and Hank visited Old Colony Historical Museum to look up information on the dedication of the Fountain in 1968. Armand and Hank each visited the Taunton Library. Armand got story clippings of the dedication, Hank was able to get a copy of a book that listed all the donors that gave to the memorial fund. Dennis and Bob searched the gazette archives for information.

  • Allied Veterans; Ed Hall, our representative to the Allied Veterans, told everyone that it looks like there will be a Memorial Day Parade this year but the following years are in question.

Unfinished Business

  • Jackets: Jackets that were ordered by the membership were given out.

  • POW/MIA Day We need trucks to pick up the Wall, dog tags, etc. from Al Biden in Lakeville. Those that can help, please call Bob Silvia. Tony Rosario has fixed our speaker system!

  • 4 Chaplains: Mary Standish talked about how well attended it was and passed a picture of the participants around. Dave Levesque asked for a copy for our records.

  • Scholarship: Vice President-Dennis Proulx, informed everyone that all applications were due back by the end of March.

  • Slide Show; The slide show at Council for the Aging in Taunton is April 10th 1pm. All are welcome to attend. If you are going, please let Tracey know at the Council on Aging. She needs to know so that she can have enough refreshments available.

  • Chicken BBQ; It is scheduled for May 19th at Dighton Pavilion off of Rt. 138. Tony will have flyers and tickets available at the next meeting.

  • Cruise Nights; They are scheduled for June 23 th, July 28 th and August 25 th from 4 to 8 PM behind the Dighton Town Hall.

New Business

  • Boots on the ground; A brunch will be held at the Dudley Brown VFW Post 2846 in Onset, March 31st at 10 AM. Vice President-Dennis Proulx suggested that we buy 4 tickets and send 4 members to represent the TAVVA. A motion was made and approved by membership.

  • USS Constitution May18th Turn Around; Secretary of Veterans Affairs Francisco Urena offered the TAVVA a limited amount of tickets to board the ship for their annual turn around ceremony. Sign up sheets were filled out and collected.

  • Louie Demers passed out free tickets to the US Dept of Veterans Affairs “Opioid Abuse, PTSD, Suicide Prevention Educational Program on April 12th at the VFW, 82 Ingell St., Taunton from 5 to 9 PM. There are still some tickets available.

  • Memorial Day wreaths have been ordered. Help will be needed to put them up in early May.

Moment of Silent Hope; Chaplain, Armand L’Heureux, led the membership in a moment of silent Hope.

The membership was reminded that the next meeting will be April 2nd.

February 5, 2018, Newsletter/Meeting Minutes

 

The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Association will be March 5, 7:00 P.M. at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Mass.

 

Called to Order; The meeting was Called to Order by President-Bob Silvia at 7:00 PM.

 

Pledge of Allegiance; President, Bob Silvia, led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

 

Opening Prayer; Chaplain, Armand L’Heureux, read the Opening Prayer.

 

Roll Call of Officers; President-Bob Silvia, Vice President-Dennis Proulx, Treasurer-Dave Levesque, Chaplain- Armand L’Heureux and Secretary-Hank Mello were all present.

 

President Bob Silvia told the membership that he was changing the order of business in order to have Tracey Medeiros from the Patriot Riders give a presentation. The Patriot Riders are looking for local area veterans in need. The Secretary will send her the addresses and phone numbers to the local Veterans Service organizations. It was felt that they would be the best source for this kind of information.

 

Treasurer’s Report; Treasurer, Dave Levesque, read the Treasurer's Report for the month of January. 

 

Reading of the Previous Meeting; Secretary, Hank Mello, read the minutes for the month of January.

 

Reading of Correspondence;

·         President, Bob Silvia, read a thank you card for the donation we made to the Corline Cronin Family Fund.

·         President, Bob Silvia, read a thank you card from the wife of Doug Ford who appreciated all we had done at the funeral for Doug.

 

Application for Membership; None

 

Committee Reports;

·         2018 Fiftieth Year Anniversary of the Vietnam Fountain; Dennis Proulx told the membership that the date will be October 20th of 2018. Members of the committee met with the Old CoolonyHistorical Museum and obtained a lot of information that went into the plans for the fountain.

·         Ann Matulis, from Suicide Prevention, was at the meeting. She agreed to help in the production of our material for the celebration of the 50 Anniversary of the Vietnam Fountain.

·         50th Anniversary Coins: Vice President-Dennis Proulx, told the membership that 100 coins were to be delivered to him by the 15th of February.

 

Unfinished Business

 

·         Jackets: Vice President Dennis Proulx, had brought TAVVA hoodies to the meeting for sale.

·         Flags of Valor: President-Bob Silvia, told the membership that we have received $2,500.00 from the Kiwanis Club of Taunton from the sale of the Flags of Valor. The presentation of the check came at the LaFamilia restaurant on January 30th. There were 13 members present at the event. The Kiwanis Club was gracious enough to also pay for our lunch. Secretary of Mass Veterans Affairs, Francisco Urena, was also present and told us he wanted to keep him up to date with all the things we are doing.

·         4 Chaplains: The 4 Chaplains Ceremony was held February 4 in Middleboro. Chip Metzger and Walter Elliot attended the event. They both said that the ceremonies were outstanding

·         Scholarship: Secretary Hank Mello, had copies of the scholarship applications.

 

New Business

·         Slide Show; Vice President Dennis Proulx, said that we would be doing another slide show on April 10th at the Taunton Council on Aging. The Taunton Veterans Service representative will available to answer questions about veteran’s benefits.

 

Good of the Association; Tony Rosario had gone before the Dighton Council to get permission for the Cruise Nights. He did receive permission for our Cruise Nights.

 

Salute the Flag; President, Bob Silvia, led the membership in a salute to the flag.

 

Moment of Silent Hope; Chaplain, Armand L’Heureux, led the membership in a moment of silent Hope.

 

The membership was reminded that the next meeting will be March 5thth.

January 8, 2018 Newsletter/Meeting Minutes

 

The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Association will be February 5, 7:00 P.M. at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Mass.

 

Called to Order; The meeting was Called to Order by President-Bob Silvia at 7:00 PM.

Pledge of Allegiance; President, Bob Silvia, led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Opening Prayer; Chaplain, Armand L’Heureux, read the Opening Prayer.

Roll Call of Officers; President-Bob Silvia, Vice President-Dennis Proulx, Treasurer-Dave Levesque, Chaplain- Armand L’Heureux and Secretary-Hank Mello were all present.

 

President Bob Silvia told the membership that he was changing the order of business in order to have State Representative Shaunna O’Connell invite the membership to the presentation of a check from the Kiwanis Club from the sale of American flags. The check will be presented noontime at the LaFamilia restaurant on January 30th.

 

Treasurer’s Report; Treasurer, Dave Levesque, read the Treasurer's Report for the month of January. 

Reading of the Previous Meeting; Secretary, Hank Mello, read the minutes for the month of December. The Secretary was asked to make minor correction to the meeting minutes.

Reading of Correspondence;

·         Along with dues payments, Shaunna O’Connell sent a Christmas card from her family, Don Hirschy sent a Christmas card and Chuck Ploeger explained that his wife was having more difficulties and he was sorry was wasn’t able to attend many of our activities.

·         We received a letter from Heidrea for Heroes for our donation.  It was decided that we will only work with them for veterans in the Taunton area.

·         President, Bob Silvia, asked the Secretary to send a thank you card to Nancy & Tony Figuerido for decorating our Christmas tree on Church Green.

 

Application for Membership; None

Committee Reports;

·         2018 Fiftieth Year Anniversary of the Vietnam Fountain; Dennis Proulx told the membership that the date will be October 20th of 2018. Dennis had set up a meeting for January 10 with representatives from Liberty & Union about coordinating our ceremony with their ceremony which is on the same day.        John Bouchard has agreed to be our guest speaker.

·         50th Anniversary Coins: After reviewing paper copies of the coins, it was decided to purchase 100 coins.

Unfinished Business

 

·         Dues: More dues money had been received.

·         Jackets: Dennis Proulx was accepting orders for the jacket we use in our ceremonies and hoodies. Dennis was buying a number of the hoodies at various sizes.

New Business

 

·         Slide Show; Dennis Proulx said that we would be doing another slide show on April 17th at the Taunton Council on Aging.

·         4 Chaplains: The 4 Chaplains Ceremony will be held February 4 at the Central United Methodist Church, 14 School St in Middleboro. The ceremonies begin at 10 AM. Participants are asked to arrive between 9:30 and 9:45 Am. The snow date is the following week.

·         Scholarship: Hank Mello sent out copies of the scholarship applications the local area high schools. He was asked to send a copy of the scholarship application to Dighton-Rehoboth High School as well.

Good of the Association; Dennis Proulx notified the membership that Hank Snow was home and doing better. He hoped members might stop by to see him or give him a call.
