March 2017 Newsletter/Meeting Minutes

 

The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Association will be April 3rd, 7:00 P.M. at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Mass.

 

The March 6th meeting began at 7:00 PM.

 

President-Bob Silvia led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

 

Chaplain-Chip Metzger read the opening prayer.

 

Roll call of officers; President-Bob Silvia, Treasurer-Dave Levesque, Chaplain-Chip Metzger, were present. Secretary/Recorder-Hank Mello was excused.

 

Treasurer-Dave Levesque, read the treasurers report for the month of February. The membership accepted the report as presented.

 

The February meeting minutes were not read since Secretary/Recorder-Hank Mello was no present.

 

Application for membership; None

 

Correspondence; None

 

President Bob Silvia asked the membership to change the regular order of business in order to introduce Jonathan Chase from Chase Realty who spoke to the membership about a program where his company will to give $1,500.00 to our scholarship fund. If any member of our group or their relatives buys or sells a home through him, his company will make the $1,500.00 donation. He spoke for about ten minutes and stayed for the rest of the meeting.

 

Old Business

 

POW/MIA Remembrance Day; The membership was reminded that POW/MIA day is March 26th, 2017.

 

Bricks at the Global War on Terrorism Memorial; President Bib Silvia reported that the bricks and sidewalk will not be repaired until after our POW/MIA Remembrance Day.

 

Chicken Barbeque; Tony Rosario said the date of the Chicken Barbeque was Saturday, May 20th. It will be held at the Dighton Pavilion on Route 138 behind the Dighton Town Hall.  The price for this is year is $14.00 per person. President Bob Silvia asked each person to donate one item as a raffle prize.

 

Cruise Nights; Tony Rosario said the Cruise Nights would be June 24th, July 22nd and August 26th. Tony has received approval for from the Town of Dighton.

 

Hats and T-shirt:  Dennis Proulx has order more t-shirts in various sizes.

 

Slide Show: Taunton High School would like us to present our Slide Show in May before a large group. But they asked to see the Slide Show photos prior to being viewed by the students.

 

Scholarship Application; Scholarship applications must be post marked by March 31st in order to be consider for this year’s scholarship awards.

 

 

New Business

 

National League of POW/MIA Families membership of $25.00 was approved by the membership.

 

At our next meeting in April, Quilts of Valor will discuss their programs of awarding hand-made quilts to deserving veterans.

 

Chaplain-Chip Metzger led the membership in a moment of silent Hope.

 

The membership was reminded that the next meeting will be April 3rd.

POW/MIA Remembrance Day March 26th

Chicken BBQ is May 20th.

Cruise Nights are June24th, July 22nd and August 26th.

POW/MIA Vigil is September 17th.

We award scholarships to local area students.

Donate money to local charities.

 

But our purpose and goals remaining the same:

* To improve the conditions for Vietnam Veterans.

* To promote positive education for all on Vietnam and its Veterans.

* To assist the needs of our members and their familieswhenever possible.

* To provide Vietnam Veterans representation at areameetings and ceremonies when required or requested.

* To insure the continuing remembrance of our fallenbrothers and sisters and those still listed as M.I.A.'s.

 MAY 2016 NEWSLETTER/MINUTES



The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Assoc. will be June 6th, 7:00 PM., at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Ma.


May meeting opened at 7:03 PM.


Vice President Dennis Proulx led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.


Chaplain Chip Metzger read opening prayer.


Roll call of Officers; Vice President Dennis Proulx, Treasurer Dave Levesque, Chaplain Chip Metzger and Secretary Henry Mello were all present. President Bob Silva was excused.


Dave Levesque read treasurer’s report.


Secretary, Hank Mello read the minutes for April meeting.


Correspondence; We received a thank you card from Hank Snow for our donation to help with the cost of his new shower.

No new applications for membership was received.


We moved away from the regular order of business in order to present the scholarships winners with their check of $1,000.00. The winners are Erin Sutermeister, Nicholas Pruyn and Anna Brodeur.



Old Business


The Homes for the Troops was a great success. There were between 40 & 50 who participated in the dinner. Hamburgs and hot dogs were served instead of spaghetti.


The Allied Vets’ next meeting will be May 17th and plans for memorial Day parade will  be finalized


Vice President, Dennis Proulx, reported that the Adopt a Highway would be held on Friday May 6th at 9 AM. He also mentioned that new signs were being made, the old ones were demolished by car crashes.


Tony Rosario had tickets for the Chicken Barbeque that was coming up May 21st. The ticket price is $13.00. 


Tony reminder everyone that he needed the final count of tickets sales by May 13th. As of the night of the meeting, 70 tickets had been sold. People can call and reserve tickets. NONE WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR!!



Tony Rosario announced that the Cruise Nights are June 25, July 23 and August 27. Tony was going to have 500 copies of the poster for the Cruise Nights made by Staples.



It was decided that we would purchase 2 Cow Chips for the Annual Lions Club Cow Chip contest.


Vice President, Dennis Proulx notified the membership that he had received word the Young Maries received our donation for the troops and they would buy goods to send to active duty service men and women. Vice President, Dennis Proulx mentioned that the Young Marines would like to see our slide show at a later date.


Vice President, Dennis Proulx mentioned that State Representative, Shaunna O’Connell has confirmed that the Secreatary of the Massachusetts VA will be at our Vigil in September. He will bring along 50th Vietnam Anniversary pins for Vietnam Veterans.


The Hyannis Cape Cod Care for the Troops would be held the Sunday before Memorial Day, May 29th. For more info log onto:

The Middleboro Memorial Day Veterans group was looking for someone from the Coast Guard to represent their branch of the service.



New Business


The placing of wreaths will start this Wednesday May 5th. A signup sheet was passed around to the membership for those who were able to help placing the wreaths in the various locations. All the wreaths are not ready yet, those that signed up will be notified when they are!


The membership was asked for volunteers who were able to place flags in the Mayflower Hill Cemetery on May 21st at 8:00 AM. This was the same day as the Chicken Barbeque but anyone who could help, would be greatly appreciated. THOSE THAT CAN HELP PLEASE MEET AT THE LAST ENTRANCE INTO MAYFLOWER OFF OF EAST BRITANNIA ST.


THERE WILL BE NO MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE AT MAYFLOWER HILL CEMETERY THIS YEAR. DON FRENCH WHO USUALLY HEADS THE SERVICE HAS PASSED. A SERVICE AT THE VIETNAM MEMORIAL WILL BE HELD AT APPROX 11:15. INFO ON THE PARADE WILL BE AFTER 5/17 MEETING OF THE ALLIED VETS.


The people from Bridgewater State Prison asked if we could do our slide show presentation in July.


Treasurer, Dave Levesque, told the membership that the Swansea Library was having a book signing on May 12th at 6:30 PM for the book “Vietnam Medavac.” The writer of the book, Walter Wisniewski, would be present at the book signing.


A moment of silent Hope was held.


The membership was reminded that the next meeting will be June 6th.

Correspondence; Homes for the Troop Dinner will be held on Tuesday, April 12. President Bob Silva was asked for a count of the people looking to attend. 


We received a letter from Major Dave Anderson from the Jr ROTC program at Taunton High School. I the letter he described that they were holding a Retirement of the Flag ceremony on April 8th at 3:00 PM. Has been changed to April 29th! 


The VFW post in Norton was having a fund raiser for the Granite Circle of Flags. The membership voted to purchase a 3-line brick for $50.00. 

The Massachusetts Vigil Society requested a donation. The Membership voted to give them $300.00. 


There were no new applications for membership. 


The membership was reminded that the Adopt-A-Highway was April 15. Those wishing to participate were to meet beyond the RT 495overpass on Bay Street. 


All agreed that the annual POW/MIA Day was a great success. 


Tony Rosario had tickets for the Chicken Barbeque that was coming up May 21st. The ticket price would be $13.00. Tony reminder everyone that he needed the final count of ticket sales by May 13th.

 New Business; A check for $100.00 was received from Manheim Auto Auction, thanks to Tony Rosario. 


A check for $600 was received for our annual Quarters Allowance from the City of Taunton. Dennis Proulx had completed the letter necessary for our allowance. 


The membership voted to donate $100.00 to Young Marines in Fall River to held them in the Care Packages for the troops. Chaplain Chip Metzger was going to follow up on who the check had go to at the Van Gyzen Chapter in Fall River.  


The membership voted to donated $1,300.00 to Hank Snow to complete the short fall of money needed for the completion of his handicap assessable bathroom. The VA would give him half the cost of $6,602.50 for the bathroom. The Sgt. Shane Duffy Fund agreed to donate $2,000.00. With our $1,300.00 donation, it would cover the remaining costs. 


After the meeting, the secretary received a call from President Bob Silva to inform the membership that the 3 scholarships would be awarded at the May 2nd meeting. The breakdown of the scholarships was 2 at $1,000 and another $1,000.00 scholarship for a member of the Jr ROTC program at Taunton High School.


The President also mentioned that the walkway at the Vietnam Memorial would be widened because of ADA.  

A moment of silent Hope was held. 


The membership was reminded that the next meeting will be May 2nd.

MARCH 2016 NEWSLETTER/MINUTES

February meeting opened at 7:05 PM.


President Bob Silva led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Correspondence: A thank you card was received from the wife of Richard Carter. Dennis Proulx stated to the membership he gave her one of our coins at the wake. Also Dennis mentioned that  a TAVVA hat was with him in the casket.


Old Business; The membership was reminded that Jon Chace with Keller Williams Realty presented a proposal that if one of our members recommended someone to him for the sale or purchase of a home, he would donate $250.00 to the TAVVA. The only condition was that we would received the $250.00 at the final sale or purchase of the property.


The patches for Associate and Auxiliary members will be available shortly.

Two Scholarship application has been received so far. The membership was reminded that 2 scholarships were open to any one that will be going to a tuition based school next year. Another scholarship will be reserved for a graduating senior from Taunton High who is also in Jr ROTC. The person who will receive the Jr ROTC scholarship will be decide by Major Dave Anderson.


The membership was reminded that the Adopt-A-Highway will be starting in April instead of March. A final date has yet to be decided.


POW/MIA Day is scheduled for March 27th this year. There was some concern because it was Easter Sunday. A program is being developed for the POW/MIA Day. A number of elected official will not be able to attend because of the Easter Holiday. Representative Shauna O'Connell stated she will be attending. 


The guest speaker will be Cappy Capozzoliu from Rolling Thunder Chapter 1.


The Ed Hall from the Allied Veterans Council is looking for assistance for organizing this year's parade.


We will be putting up wreaths around the city in May. All the wreaths will be ready the first week in May. If you see a wreath from last year in bad shape please remove it.


Dennis Proulx was looking for TAVVA balloons but he has not find one that quite works for us.


Homes for our Troops will be putting on a free spaghetti dinner but there plans are not finalized.


The membership voted to donate $500.00 to fellow member Dave Brisart who is in needed of a new handicapped van. As of March 10th, Dave still needed $1,230.00 to complete the purchase his $4,000.00 handicapped van. If the membership wanted to help Dave, they could go to his gofundme page of www.gofundme.com/6pm6kvf8. 


If you don’t want to use your credit card you can give money or check to Dennis Proulx or Hank Mello and they will use their card to do it on gofundme site.


Shauna O'Connell is working with VA Secretary Urena  to possible award 50th anniversary commemoration pins to Vietnam Veterans at our Vigil in September.


Dave Levesque said he went to a book signing for a fellow Vietnam veteran named Walter Wisniewki. The name of his book is "Vietnam Medevac". He mentioned that we might want to invite him to a future meeting.


Dave Levesque has filed out our 990 tax form for this year.


The 50 Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration Event was mentioned. The details will be sent out to membership.

A moment of silent Hope was held.


The membership was reminded that the next meeting will be April 4th.

 JANUARY 2016 NEWSLETTER/MINUTES


The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Assoc. will be March 7th, 7:00 PM., at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Ma.


January meeting opened at 7:03 PM.


President Bob Silva led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes for January were read.


Dave Levesque read treasurer’s report. He also reported that we gave away to charities, scholarships etc, over $5300 last year.


Correspondence was received but they came from originations we had given to recently. No action was taken.



Old Business


Jon Chace with Keller Williams Realty presented a proposal that if one of our members recommended someone to him for the sale or purchase of a home, he would donate $250.00 to the TAVVA. The only condition was that we would received the $250.00 at the final sale or purchase of the property.

The jackets just came in last week and are in the process of being embroidered. They will be available before the next meeting.

There was some discuss about the Wounded Warriors Organization's miss use of funds. A good project that is mismanaged.


There is a service for the "Four Chaplains" next Sunday, Feb 7th at the Abington Congregational Church at 10.00 AM.

JANUARY NEWSLETTER/MINUTES

The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Assoc. will be Feb 1st, 7:00 p.m., at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, east Britannia St. Taunton, Ma.


January meeting opened at 7:02 p.m.


Pledge of Allegiance was conducted.


Chaplain Chip Metzger read opening prayer.


Roll call of Officers; Vice President, Treasurer and Chaplain present. President Bob Silvia ill and Secretary Henry Mello on vacation.


Minutes for November and December were read.


Dave Levesque read treasurer’s report. He also reported that we gave away to charities, scholarships etc, over $5300 last year. This is a good example of how we help out veterans and the community!


Correspondence was read.  There were “thank  you's”  from, Dana Farber, New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, Homes for our Troops, Vietnam Wall Foundation,  Mass Gold Star Families Memorial and a special hand written thank you from a Vet that we donated money to  for a water heater!


Old Business


Search for Associate and Auxiliary member patches is still on going.


Our stock of black and green hats has been replenished.



New Business


Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Richard Carter who past away. Sgt Carter was a member (Vietnam Vet) of the group. 


He also was former  sgt for the THS Jr ROTC  and past graves registration officer for the City of Taunton. The TAVVA  is sending a donation to the American heart Assoc. in his name.


Get well goes out to our president Bob Silvia!


We received a $200 donation from Carol McGowan. Carol is the sister of John McGowan long time member and Secretary of the TAVVA , who we greatly miss!


POW/MIA Day is scheduled for March 27th this year. A program is being worked up for this.


Homes for our Troops will be putting on a free spaghetti dinner 3-4 times a year in appreciation for Support from local veterans! Jim Gray will keep us informed as to when they will be scheduled.


Jon Chace, from Chace properties, has contacted the TAVVA about a special program he would like to have with us. 


He proposed that if properties are sold from a referral initiated by any member, Chace Properties will make a donation to the TAVVA.  Jon  will be invited to the February meeting to talk about this proposition.

November 2016 Newsletter


The next meeting of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veteran’s Association will be December 5th, 7:00 P.M.at the Taunton Rifle & Pistol Club, East Britannia St. Taunton, Mass.

 

The November 7thmeeting began at 7:06 PM.

 

President-Bob Silvia, led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Roll call of officers; President-Bob Silvia, Vice-President-Dennis Proulx, Treasurer-Dave Levesque, Chaplain-Chip Metzger, Secretary/Recorder-Hank Mello were present.

 

Secretary/Recorder-Hank Mello, read the minutes from the Octobermeeting. The membership accepted the corrected meeting minutes.

 

Treasurer-Dave Levesque, read the treasurers report for October. The membership accepted the report as presented.

 

Nomination and Election of Officers: The membership nominated the present slate of officers for next year. Everyone accepted except for Dennis Proulx as Vice President. He explained that the upcoming year was going to be a busy time in his life. President Bob Silvia tabled that nomination until the next meeting.

 

Correspondence;We received letters from various groups asking for donations. The membership voted the following:


Vietnam Memorial, $100.00


Corlene Cronin Family Fund, $200.00


Purchase $25.00 gift cards from Market Basket totaling $250.00. We give the gift cards to the Veterans Service at City Hall in Taunton. They distribute them to vets in need.


New England Homeless Shelter, $100.00

 

We also received a letter from the Wareham Veterans Council for the use of our newly obtained POW/MIA and American Flag. President Bob Silvia would be contacting them about their request.


Application for membership; We received I application for membership. Betty Vogell was accepted as anAssociate Member.



Old Business

 

Adopt-A-Highway;Vice-President-Dennis Proulx announced the program was done for the year

 

Hats and T-shirt: Vice-President-Dennis Proulx announced that the order of hats and t-shirts were still on going. Also, we ordered pull over hats (stocking hats) and T-shits saying, I don’t have a PHD but I do have a DD14.

 

Green Airport;Vice President-Dennis Proulx announced that he went to the airport on Nov.3rd for a 3 to 7 PM shift to be there for vets and members of the military and their families. After he was done with his shift, he locked up the area because no one was there for the next shift.

 

Green Beret 45 Record;The Old Colony was very excited to receive the 45 record from a veteran’s sister, Joanne Rose. They plan on displaying it and other memorabilia in the spring of next year.

 

Recognition of Vietnam Veterans from Taunton;We had contact Vietnam Veteran KIA Larry Andrews sister, Donna Leonard, about having an overpass named for Larry. At the last minute, the family changed their mind. So, we are now looking to name an overpass for Vietnam Veteran KIA, Raymond LaPointe.

 

Norton VFW Dedication;SeveralTAVVA members attended the event of the Circle of Flags at the Norton VFW. It was an outstanding event and so very well done by the Norton VFW.

 

December Christmas Meeting; President Bob Silvia said the meeting would be a short one. The membership was asked to let him know if they planned on bring food from home so he wouldn’t purchase as much.

 

Trailer; On hold

 

Veterans Day Information; The membership was asked to dress in the black outfit and huddle up at the Dough Boy on the Taunton Green at 10.45 AM.

The membership was reminded that their dues of $10.00 was now due.

 

Christmas Train;It was asked to all who could help the night of December 3rd from 4 to 8 PM with their participation. The Christmas Train leaves from of the old city hall. We had asked the vendor to be sure to fix the seat belts on the train.

 

Free Meals in the Area on Veterans Day;Lorenzos in Middleboro, Friendly’s- Breakfast, to name a few. The secretary would notify the membership by email of other businesses offering free meals as Veterans Day got closer.
